Located in Central Vancouver Island, the Emergency Room at NRGH provides care for a catchment population of almost 200,000 people.
Ideally situated in Departure Bay, Nanaimo provides quick access to Victoria, Vancouer, the Pacific Rim National Park, and the North Island. Easily accessible by car, ferry, or float plane.
Fun fact, Nanaimo Bars were not invented here, but instead became a popular treat when Nanaimo's primary industry was coal mining. They were sent in care packages sent from England because they travelled well.
Nonetheless, Nanaimo is the chocolate covered custard dessert capital of the world.
Recently hitting a census of 100,000 people, Nanaimo continues to be a popular destination to retire to. We serve 3 of the oldest communities in Canada!
Currently impossible due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are active efforts to introduce a dog therapy program at NRGH, with the option of eligible patients having a moment of canine distraction to help allieviate the stress of the ED.
